Maresca: Some of our red cards could have been avoided, and Delap still has some areas that can be improved.

At 1:30 a.m. on November 2, Chelsea will play Tottenham away in a focus match in the 10th round of the 2025-26 Premier League season. Before the game, Blues coach Maresca attended the press conference. He talked about some of the team's current situation.

Have you communicated with Delap after his red card?

——I don’t need to communicate with him, I have already told him that he knows everything, he understands the situation, he knows that he made a mistake, that’s it, no need to say anything more.

Regarding the discipline issue

- I think some of the red cards we received could have been avoided.

About changing the discipline situation

- This is also where we need to learn and improve. There is no doubt that we will do better in the future.

Is Delap still a long way from being your ideal player?

——I am not British, so sometimes when I translate Italian into English, it feels a little different. When Delap is on the court, he will be more focused on fighting defenders, that's what I want to say. There are three players in this team that I know better than the others, namely Lavia, Palmer and Delap, because I have known them before in the Manchester City U21 team. I know Delap is going to be a very good player on our team, but there are some areas where he can improve.

About Tottenham's record at home

- I think Tottenham are in very good shape, they won the Europa League and have started the season well. It's a derby and it's going to be a tough game.

Regarding the left winger

--Ganacho and Gittens are adapting as we work each day and they are both doing a great job. This is exactly what we expect from a winger: goals and assists. They both do a great job, which is great, so we can make a choice based on the situation.

About conceding goals from set pieces

- I think with set pieces, you can score goals, but of course you can also concede goals. We conceded goals because we were not strong enough defensively. Defending set pieces is really difficult.

About defending the power throw

- Of course, we are working hard to improve.

Did Delap apologize?

-After that game, Delap immediately apologized to everyone in the locker room.

About Palmer's injury

- I met him in the cafeteria at breakfast and I told him he would be back within a week, he smiled and we are still waiting.

Let’s talk about team discipline

- I think like I have said many times, I like to learn and improve. We are currently doing everything we can to avoid this situation and hope we can learn from it and do better in the future.
