Sometimes we find that after eating the food, dogs usually find a place to store the unfinished food. Many owners may be confused about this behavior. Why do dogs like to hide their food?
This is related to the dog's previous living environment. In the past, dogs were social animals, so as long as there was food, a large group of dogs usually came to grab food, and many dogs would not be able to eat food. So whenever the food is rich they will hide it so that they can be eaten if necessary.
This strange dining behavior of dogs follows the ancient instinct of dog ancestors as hunters and scavengers. Because dogs’ ancestors cannot expect humans to feed them twice a day at regular intervals.
It is precisely because dogs and other species of wild dogs cannot guarantee that they can eat when they are hungry. Dogs will hide their killed prey in different places, so that they can return to these places to eat when they are hungry but cannot catch prey.
Some domestic dogs, especially those breeds like the Brittany Beagle, still retain this instinct. In fact, some dogs will hide pieces of dog food in every corner or under the furniture before they come back to eat.
Even if the dog has a fixed meal time every day, this ancient instinct will still drive her to hide the dog food in different places so that the dog can then go back and eat it again, even if it comes back in a few minutes to find the hidden food to eat again. But it seems to dogs do this to ensure that there is a sufficient and stable source of food in the future.
